Reselling News: eBay Opens a Bigger Authentication Center While Its Biggest Consignment Partner Walks to Poshmark
eBay and TCGplayer cut the ribbon on a 145,000 square foot authentication center, Linda's Stuff moved to Poshmark, and eBay hired a new shipping chief.
Three eBay items landed in three days this week, and read together they say something a seller can use. The company is pouring money into the part of a sale that happens after the buyer clicks pay, and at the same time it quietly lost the operation that ran the front end of its consignment business.
The Louisville authentication center got a lot bigger
On August 12, eBay and TCGplayer held a ribbon cutting on a 145,000 square foot authentication center in south Louisville, Kentucky, with the mayor and state officials on hand. It is eBay's third authentication center in the United States and its eighth worldwide. The building handles Authenticity Guarantee work for sneakers and handbags on one side and TCGplayer trading card verification, sorting, and fulfillment on the other. Staffing is expected to pass 140 by the end of this month, reach roughly 180 within a year, and top 220 within five. WAVE 3 News covered the opening, and Value Added Resource has the fuller history, including the 2021 Sneaker Con purchase and the 2022 TCGplayer acquisition that led here.
What to do about it: if you sell in an authenticated category, remember that your package has a stop in the middle of the trip. That leg is real days, so do not promise a buyer a delivery date you have no control over, and answer the "where is it" message with the honest answer that it routes through authentication first. Pack for two openings, not one. The authenticator handles the item before the buyer ever does, and an item that arrives in Kentucky loose in a bag is one that gets handled more than it should.
The company behind eBay Consignment is now selling on Poshmark
Linda's Stuff, the Pennsylvania operation Linda Lightman built, sold on eBay for more than 25 years and grew into one of the platform's largest fashion sellers. It became eBay's exclusive United States consignment partner in 2023 and expanded into luxury fashion in 2024. On August 11 it announced on Instagram that it has moved its selling and its livestream shows to Poshmark, with more than 100,000 items still listed on eBay while that inventory winds down. Value Added Resource reported the move and notes that eBay's consignment landing page has since disappeared with no announcement.
We covered the Poshmark side of this a week ago, when Poshmark said it was buying the Linda's Stuff facilities to build consignment as a service. What is new is that the seller itself picked a side, and it was not eBay.
What to do about it: if you have been sending designer pieces out to be consigned, the address changed and the terms will change with it. If you sell women's designer apparel and handbags yourself, watch where Poshmark aims its luxury buyers this fall. Traffic follows the money a platform spends, and Poshmark is spending on that end of the closet right now.
eBay hired a warehouse operator to run shipping and authentication
On August 13, eBay named Andres Gonzalez vice president and general manager of global shipping and authentication. His background is logistics, not marketplaces: roughly 16 years at Walmart across two stints, most recently leading supply chain strategy, ecommerce fulfillment, and last mile, then about four years at Amazon Global Cross Border on parcel operations and network strategy, then a year and a half over supply chain at Peloton. Value Added Resource has the details.
What to do about it: nothing today. Just know that eBay is already testing managed shipping in the United States and Germany, and putting a career logistics operator over both shipping and authentication is not a sign those tests are slowing down. Read the shipping notices in your seller hub this fall instead of clicking past them.
The takeaway
None of this is a fee change, so nothing forces your hand today. What it tells you is where the platforms are placing bets. eBay is buying the middle of the transaction, the part between your shipping label and the buyer's front door, and Poshmark is buying the top of the closet. Knowing which categories each platform is fighting for is how you decide where a given item should go, and that decision is worth more than any single listing tip. That is the work we do together inside The Income Lab.
